The port city of Anchorage is a beautiful and cosmopolitan place to visit which is surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty and has a rich history.
Anchorage is located by the Gompertz Channel and the Gulf of Alaska in south central Alaska. It is a bustling town with many good shops, bars and restaurants which still manages to remain unspoilt.
Known as the ‘last frontier’, Anchorage is an ideal base from which to get out and explore nature. With six mountain ranges around Anchorage as well as lakes, rivers, glaciers and forests there is more to see and do around Anchorage than is possible during a lifetime.
This vast area is home to many awe inspiring species of animals such as moose, brown and black bears and migratory birds. It is also an ideal place to star gaze with clear night skies and a chance to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
There are many national parks near Anchorage which are worth visiting such as Denali National Park and Preserve, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Wrangell – St Elias National Park and Preserve and Kenai Wildlife Refuge.
Many people come to Alaska to enjoy unparalleled fishing opportunities, especially for the whopping salmon which can be found in its rivers. If you prefer to eat the salmon without having to catch it there are some seafood restaurants which serve sumptuous food too.
Car Rental Anchorage gives you the freedom to do so and you may wish to consider renting a four by four vehicle and requesting snow tires in case of icy conditions.
There are numerous places which you can drive to and then park up and enjoy a walk. Head to the Glen Alps by driving eastwards on O’Malley Road in south Anchorage and join the stunning hiking trail for a $5 fee. And of course there are some excellent skiing options. Drive to the Alyeska resort which is about half an hour south of Anchorage in Girdwood or contact the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage for more information.
The main Anchorage highways are the Seward Highway which goes towards the Kenai Peninsula and the Glenn Highway which eventually joins with the Alaska Highway.
If you are flying in to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport it is accessible by plane from most major American cities as well as destinations further afield such as Taipei in China. Upon arrival you can pick up your Rhino rental car through companies such as Avis, hertz, National and Thrifty.

To get a sense of the history of Anchorage visit the Alaska Native Heritage Centre which holds demonstrations on the culture of native Alaskans as well as various displays and has free admission for children under six. Likewise the Anchorage Museum of History and Art has exhibits on Alaskan history and is an interesting place to visit.
In terms of accommodation choices you will be spoilt for choice in Alaska with a range of good hotels and bed and breakfasts to suit every taste and budget as well as secluded and romantic lakeside cabins.
