If you’re an avid surfer, you’ve probably heard of or visited Puerto Escondido, Mexico’s amazing surfing paradise. It has some of best surfing on the planet, regardless of the time of year. But even if you’re not a surfer, there are plenty of things to do and plenty of reasons to visit this magnificent corner of Mexico.
Puerto Escondido, located on the Pacific Coast in the State of Oaxaca, is easy to reach. As one of Mexico’s key port cities, there are plenty of cruise lines that dock in this port. The airport also makes air travel a breeze from numerous cities within Mexico.
If travelling by car, the relatively new highway system connects Puerto Escondido with neighboring cities, even to Acapulco. And if travelling within the city, you’ll have your choice of taxis, buses or rental cars.
The ideal time of year to visit this charming Mexican city is during the non-rainy season, from mid-November through to May. But even if you’re vacation coincides with the other times of year, you’ll still be able to enjoy this locale since rains are short and the weather is warm.
As far as activities, nothing beats surfing the gigantic waves at Puerto Escondido. It’s the place where champions come to hone in their skills. But even if you’ve never stepped foot on a surfboard before, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. On Puerto Escondido’s endless beaches, you can snorkel, dive or just relax on the white sandy shores.
Puerto Escondido is also known for its lagoons, such as the popular Chacahua Lagoons. These lagoons stretch for miles, where you can take a boat excursion to explore its hidden treasures. Keep an eye out for its amazing wildlife such as sea turtles and crocodiles.
And if you want to see some of the biggest creatures on earth, sign-up for one of the many whale-watching tours where you’ll see these huge mammals up close in their natural habitat.
No visit to Puerto Escondido would be complete without visiting the area’s ancient Mixtec ruins and natural hot springs. But leave time for a stroll through the city’s open marketplace, which is held every Wednesday and Saturday. Here, you can find real bargains on authentic Mexican blankets and other locally handcrafted items.
