Hiking in Mauritius

Mauritius is not just white sand beaches, a blue lagoon stretching as far as the eye can see and luxury hotels. Its mild climate, all year round, offers the opportunity for more than one to indulge in outdoor activities in Mauritius. And what could be better in such good weather than having a good hike? The island is full of sites where nature abounds: ideal for recharging your batteries with your family, whether you are on vacation in Mauritius or a resident. Here are some routes for your family excursions in Mauritius within the reach of the little ones.

Lion Mountain, ideal for beginners

This mountain whose shape recalls that of the king of the savannah is a must. Don't be fooled by its 480 meters, the Lion Mountain will surprise you! Its reasonable height is perfect for a first hike and will delight your budding adventurers. We love its wild aspect, perfect for your family activities in Mauritius!

Your mind will be tested with its few climbing points. Once at the top, you can admire the largest bay on the island, that of the Old Grand Port, with its islets and the lagoon of Mahébourg. There will also be countless fields of cane, the perfect setting for great photos.

Le Pouce, for a family walk

Next step for your family excursions in Mauritius… Le Pouce! Its original shape has earned it its name ... Culminating at 812 meters, this mountain is located between Signal Mountain and Pieter Both. Before reaching the mountain, you will have to walk in large areas of cane fields. The first part of its ascent is perhaps one of the easiest among the peaks of the island and is within reach of the youngest. The part that leads to the summit is a little more complicated. What is good is that it is possible to picnic on the promontory located below the peak. Enough to regain strength to end this hike in style! Once at the top, you can admire Port-Louis, Moka and part of the Plaines Wilhems.

Le Morne Brabant, what a challenge!

At 555 meters high, Le Morne is on the UNESCO heritage list. With its almost intact nature, whether you are on vacation in Mauritius or residents, its ascent guarantees you a return to the past of the island. The first part of the ascent, about 255 meters, will be done without difficulty by the children. Then the course becomes steeper, the more daring among them will be challenged by the rope that leads to the summit. The ride will not be easy, but this southern gem is full of rich flora and fauna. Once you reach the summit, you will be treated to a breathtaking view: Le Morne lagoon and Île aux Bénitiers.

IMPORTANT: Always check weather predictions!

To prevent your family activities in Mauritius from turning into a mud bath, you need to make sure the weather is good. It would not be pleasant for you and the little ones to walk on muddy paths and slippery stones along the way. In short, to avoid the possibility of falls, you should consult the weather trends. Fortunately, in Mauritius, it is unlikely that you will encounter this kind of problem. We spent a few rainy days inside the cozy villa we rented, and the rest of the time, we were trekking.
